40ft Shipping Containers

40ft containers

40ft Shipping Containers for sale and hire

Twice the length, roughly twice the room, and nothing like twice the price — a used 40ft is routinely the best value per cubic metre on the yard. The catch is never the container. It is always whether a truck can get it in and lay it down straight.

Why this one

When a 40ft is the right call

  • Best value per cubic metre we sell, most weeks. A used 40ft is often only a few hundred dollars more than a used 20ft for double the space.
  • One delivery instead of two, one set of cartage instead of two, one footing to prepare instead of two.
  • Stacks and mates cleanly with another 40ft, which is what makes the two-container covered bay such a common build.

What fits inside

A large house plus a shed, or a serious workshop with room down the middle to work. Commonly bought in pairs and stood parallel with a roof over the gap to make a covered bay.

Worth knowing before you order

Access decides everything on a 40ft. It needs roughly 30 metres of straight run-in, 4 metres of width at the pinch point, no low branches and ground that will not sink under four corner castings. A side loader can work tighter than a tilt-tray, but it places the container off the right-hand — driver's — side of the trailer, so which way the truck comes in matters. Send us three photos and we will tell you before anyone quotes.

Grade matters more than anything else in a container quote. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the yard. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — one may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor, or a door seal that no longer seats properly, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with a particular unit rather than let you find it out on delivery day. New single-trip containers are unmarked, sealed, and have made one loaded voyage. If the container has to keep rain off whatever goes inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Delivery

Getting a 40ft onto your block

Roughly 30 metres of straight run-in, 4 metres at the pinch point, and no low branches over any of it. A side loader can work considerably tighter than a tilt-tray, but it places the container off the right-hand — the driver's — side of the trailer, so which direction the truck can approach from decides which side of the block the container can land on. Work that out before delivery day.

Send three photographs with your enquiry — one from the street looking in, one down the approach and one of the spot itself — and we will tell you which truck the job needs before anyone quotes.

Common questions

About 40ft containers

What are the dimensions of a 40ft shipping container?

Externally 12.19m × 2.44m × 2.59m, internally 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.39m. The door opening is 2.34m × 2.28m and the internal volume is 67.7m³. Tare weight is approx 3,800 kg. Those are standard ISO figures and they do not vary meaningfully between manufacturers — what does vary is the condition of the floor and the doors, which is a grade question rather than a size one.

What fits in a 40ft container?

A large house plus a shed, or a serious workshop with room down the middle to work. Commonly bought in pairs and stood parallel with a roof over the gap to make a covered bay.

How much does a 40ft shipping container cost?

Cargo-worthy used 40ft units start from $2,600 and new single-trip from $5,500, both guide prices ex GST. What moves them is condition, what is on the ground this week and which depot the unit has to come out of. Delivery is quoted separately with the container because it varies so much with distance and access.

What does a 40ft container need for delivery?

Roughly 30 metres of straight run-in, 4 metres at the pinch point, and no low branches over any of it. A side loader can work considerably tighter than a tilt-tray, but it places the container off the right-hand — the driver's — side of the trailer, so which direction the truck can approach from decides which side of the block the container can land on. Work that out before delivery day.
