Shipping containers Bendigo

Bendigo, VIC

Shipping containers Bendigo

A container for Bendigo comes up the Calder from Melbourne, which is good road, so the interesting part is at your end rather than on the highway. Goldfields ground is not like farm ground anywhere else — ironstone, quartz reef and a century and a half of old workings, and it is worth knowing what is under a spot before a container sits on it.

Here is the honest version of buying a container here.

The jobs they turn up on locally

Around Bendigo we deliver containers for workshop gear and machinery on the small farms and hobby blocks through Strathfieldsaye, Axedale and Marong, hay and feed for the sheep and cropping country north of town, trade and materials storage across the Bendigo industrial estates, stock overflow for businesses that outgrew the shed two years ago, gear for clubs, markets and events that comes out a few weekends a year, and secure storage for prospecting and earthmoving gear that should not be left in the open.

Access notes for this district

The run up the Calder from Melbourne through Gisborne, Kyneton and Harcourt is good road and rarely the constraint. What shapes a central Victorian delivery is the ground and the block. Goldfields soil is thin over hard material — ironstone gravel, quartz and reef rock, often at a couple of hundred millimetres — which is excellent bearing and completely unhelpful if the plan involved digging pads in. You build up on this country rather than cutting down into it. North of town toward the Loddon plains it swings the other way and becomes heavy grey clay that cracks wide open through a dry summer and turns greasy through winter, and a container placed straight onto it will follow that movement one corner at a time. The town blocks bring their own pattern. A lot of central Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Golden Square and Long Gully is older miner's-cottage stock — narrow frontages, houses set close to a boundary, driveways sized for a car of the 1960s, and mature ironbarks and peppercorns with limbs hanging exactly where a lifted bed wants to be. A good number of those are crane jobs rather than drive-ins. Out on the farms and hobby blocks it is standard rural access: long gravel driveways, gates measured optimistically, grids nobody has a rating for, and turning space at the far end that has to be real rather than hoped for. Then there is the calendar. Through the declared fire danger period a hot, dry, windy day is not a day for a truck to be sitting in dry grass on a paddock, and on a total fire ban day some work simply does not happen. We plan around it rather than pretending it is not there.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

The Calder run, and the towns off the back of it

Bendigo

The Calder run, and the towns off the back of it

Bendigo is the hub for a very wide piece of country, and that works in your favour if you are not actually in Bendigo. A truck coming up the Calder for a Bendigo drop can usually take in Castlemaine, Maldon, Harcourt, Heathcote, Elmore, Rochester or Marong on the same run, which is why we ask where else in the district the container might be going and whether your dates have any give in them. A few days of flexibility often gets a better spot in a run and a container on the ground sooner than a rigid date would. If you and a neighbour both need a unit, or you need two, say so — one movement beats two.

Ironstone, quartz and old workings

On the ground

Ironstone, quartz and old workings

This is the part of a Bendigo delivery that is genuinely different to anywhere else. Goldfields ground gives you superb bearing and almost no ability to dig. Ironstone gravel and reef rock sit close to the surface across much of the district, so the way to level a container here is to build the low side up with hardwood sleepers or concrete pads rather than to cut the high side down. Cutting in on this country is hard work with a shovel and it creates a shelf that water runs along and ponds against the container, which is the opposite of what you want under a long-term store.

The other thing is history. Parts of this district have been undermined since the 1850s — shafts, stopes, drives and mullock heaps, some mapped and some not. We are not in a position to assess anything of that kind and would not pretend to be, but it is a fair reason to think about where you put a couple of tonne of concentrated point load. If your block is in an old workings area and you know of a shaft, a subsidence or ground that has moved, tell us at the quote and we will place the container on the most solid part of the site rather than the most convenient one. Mullock heaps in particular look like firm made ground and are loose rubble held together by nothing much.

Through a central Victorian summer

Worth knowing

Through a central Victorian summer

Summer here is hot, dry and long, and it has two effects worth planning for. The first is the inside of the box. An uninsulated steel container in forty-degree heat gets brutally hot, and anything sensitive to that — batteries, chemicals, aerosols, adhesives, electronics, anything with a rubber seal in it — is better off somewhere else or in a unit that has been vented and insulated properly. Whirlybirds or extra louvre vents at both ends make a real difference for very little money, and putting the container where it gets afternoon shade makes more difference again.

The second is what is around it. Through the declared fire danger period, dry grass against a steel box in a paddock is a problem worth removing rather than tolerating. Keep the grass cut back well clear of it, keep the underside free of accumulated leaf litter and stacked timber, and think hard about what is stored inside — fuel, oils and anything volatile deserve more thought than a general-purpose store. Keep the doors accessible too, since a container parked in against a fence line with two metres of dry grass in front of it is not one you can get to in a hurry. None of this is complicated, and it takes an afternoon once a year.

What delivery to Bendigo costs

There is no flat delivery rate here worth publishing. What the truck has to do at your end changes it too much, so we quote it per job.

We would rather ask two more questions on the phone than send the wrong container up the road.

Elsewhere in the district

We also deliver to Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat, Castlemaine, Heathcote, Elmore and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Bendigo

How long does it take to get a container to Bendigo?

Usually three to six business days, and it depends on how the run out of Melbourne falls rather than on the road, which is good all the way up the Calder. Bendigo is a hub for a big district, so trucks heading that way often take in several drops, and a few days of flexibility on your date generally gets you a better place in the run. If you have a fixed date — a build start, a settlement, a lease ending — tell us at the enquiry and we will schedule around it.

Is old mining ground a problem to put a container on?

It is worth thinking about rather than worrying about. Parts of the district have been undermined since the 1850s, and mullock heaps in particular look like solid made ground while being loose rubble. We cannot assess any of that and will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is place the container on the most solid part of the site rather than the most convenient one, so if you know of a shaft, a subsidence or ground that has shifted, tell us at the quote. On sound goldfields ground the bearing is excellent — better than most farm country.

Does a container get too hot inside in a central Victorian summer?

It gets very hot. Uninsulated steel in forty-degree heat is not the place for batteries, chemicals, aerosols, adhesives, electronics or anything with a rubber seal that matters. For general storage it is fine. To improve it, fit whirlybirds or louvre vents at both ends so hot air can escape, and site it where it gets afternoon shade if the block allows. If the container is being used as a workshop or anything you have to stand in, insulate it — it changes the space completely and it is worth the outlay here.

Can you deliver to a farm north of Bendigo out toward Elmore and Rochester?

Yes, and that country is generally good access apart from the ground itself. North of town the soil turns to heavy grey clay that cracks open in summer and goes greasy through winter, so a wet stretch will move a booking rather than cancel it. The usual rural questions apply: gate width at the narrowest point, whether the grid has any known rating, culvert crossings on the driveway, and enough room at the far end for the truck to line up straight. Send a photo from the gate and one of the spot and we will plan it properly.
