Shipping containers Fernvale

There is a road called the Forest Hill Fernvale Road and our yard sits on it. That is the whole story of how close this is: about twenty-five minutes, one road, no range crossing and no city traffic. What makes Fernvale interesting is not the haul. It is that half the blocks here are five years old and the other half are a hundred.

The short version, before the detail.

What locals buy them for

Around Fernvale we deliver containers for storage on the new acreage estates around Vernor, Glamorgan Vale and Wivenhoe Pocket while a shed is designed and built, tool and trade storage for the many people here who work in Ipswich or Brisbane and run a business off the block, horse and stock gear, mower and machinery cover, dry space through a renovation, and secure overflow for the small businesses along the highway.

Getting a truck in

Fernvale has been subdividing for years and the newest estates bring a specific delivery problem: the ground is not old enough. A driveway that was poured or gravelled six months ago sits on fill that has not been through a full wet season, and the batters either side of it are still finding their angle. A truck with a container on the back is a genuine load test. Where the driveway is new we place the unit close to the hardstand at the top rather than driving the length of it, and where the crossover is fresh concrete we will ask about the pour date, because a heavy vehicle on green concrete is a repair bill with a truck parked next to it. The blocks themselves are usually generous, which is the good news. One and two acre lots give a side loader room to work, and a side loader puts a container down neatly into a defined footprint without needing the long straight run-off a tilt-tray wants. Where landscaping is already in, it is worth thinking about the approach beforehand: new turf marks badly, irrigation on a new lawn is shallow, and silt fencing and star pickets do not survive contact with a truck. The older country is different again. The river flats down toward Lowood and along the Brisbane River are alluvial and soft after rain, and the low ridges are reactive clay that heaves. Neither is a reason to avoid a spot, but both are a reason to put something solid under the corners rather than sitting the box on grass and hoping. The last practical thing is the highway. The Brisbane Valley Highway through Fernvale carries a heavy commuter flow morning and evening and it gets busy through the middle of the day on weekends. An early delivery slot is easier on everyone, and it is usually easier to get.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

Storage while the shed is still a drawing

Fernvale

Storage while the shed is still a drawing

A lot of Fernvale blocks follow the same sequence. The land settles, the house goes up, and the shed, which is the thing everybody actually wanted, is the last item and the one that gets deferred. In between there is a garage full of things that should be in a shed, a mower under a tarp and a trailer living on the lawn. A container covers that gap and it is not a compromise. It is dry, it locks, it is on the block in a day, and it holds its value if you sell it on afterwards. Plenty of people who bought one as a stopgap end up keeping it and putting the shed somewhere else entirely.

If it is a stopgap, put it where a truck can get back to it. That sounds obvious and it is regularly ignored. A container placed behind a house, past a new retaining wall and a set of garden beds, is a genuinely difficult thing to recover. Leave a straight approach from the driveway, keep landscaping out of that path until the container is gone, and if the block is still bare, take a photo of where the services run before the turf goes down. It costs nothing now and saves an argument with an excavator later.

Tilt-tray or side loader on an acreage block

On the ground

Tilt-tray or side loader on an acreage block

These are two different machines that put a container on the ground two different ways, and which one suits depends on the block rather than the container. A tilt-tray raises its tray and slides the unit off the back. It is simple, it is quick and it is the usual choice for 10ft and 20ft units, but it needs a straight clear run roughly twice the length of the container to do it, and it needs vertical clearance well above the box while the tray is up. On a wide Fernvale acreage block that is rarely a problem. On a narrow older lot with a carport and a mature tree it can be the whole problem.

A side loader carries the container alongside the truck on two hydraulic lifting arms and sets it down beside itself. It does not need the long run-off, it can place a unit into a defined footprint with real precision, and it is generally how a 40ft gets delivered. What it does need is enough width to park square to the spot and enough firm ground under the truck to take the load while it lifts. On new estate blocks with a big cleared area it is usually the easier of the two. Tell us what the spot looks like and we will send the right truck rather than the one that happens to be free. That decision gets made in the office and it is the main thing that stops a delivery going wrong.

Which way the doors should face

Worth knowing

Which way the doors should face

Orientation gets decided in about ten seconds on delivery day and then lived with for years, so it is worth thinking about beforehand. Point the doors away from the weather that actually arrives, which around here means the driving rain that comes with a southerly or a westerly change, because a container with its doors into that gets water sitting in the door sill after every storm. Afternoon sun on the door end ages the seals faster and makes the box unpleasant to open in February. Beyond weather, face the doors toward the way you will approach with a vehicle, because carrying things around the long side of a 20ft is a surprisingly tedious walk. Take five minutes with a tape before the truck arrives and mark the four corners with pegs. It is the cheapest possible way to avoid moving it again.

What delivery to Fernvale costs

Delivery is priced with the container, not separately and not off a list. One phone call gets you the real number for your address.

One call sorts it. Size, grade, where it is going and what the entry looks like — that is everything we need to price it properly.

Other areas we deliver to

We also deliver to Lowood, Coominya, Glamorgan Vale, Vernor, Marburg and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Fernvale

Will a delivery truck damage a new driveway on an estate block?

It can, and it is worth talking about before the day rather than after. New driveways sit on fill that has not been through a wet season, and fresh concrete crossovers do not like heavy vehicles at all, so if yours has been poured in the last month, tell us. Where the driveway is new we would rather place the container near the top on established hardstand than drive its full length. If the block is still bare, the whole question usually goes away and we can drive straight to the spot.

How quickly can you get a container to Fernvale?

Usually one to two business days. The yard is at Forest Hill on the Forest Hill Fernvale Road, which is named for the two ends of it, and the run is about twenty-five minutes with no range crossing and no city traffic. That short haul means we can be flexible about timing, including an early slot before the highway fills with commuter traffic, which is generally the easiest time of day to be putting a truck across a driveway on that side of town.

Can we get a container onto the block before the house is built?

Yes, and it is often the easiest kind of delivery we do, because the block is clear and the truck can drive to the spot without threading past landscaping. There is no need for power, water or an address plate. The two things to check are that the access off the road is trafficable for a heavy vehicle rather than just a ute, and that the ground where the unit will sit is firm and reasonably level. Set the corners on sleepers or pads and it will stay square right through the build.

How much room do the doors need to open?

More than most people expect. A container door swings well past ninety degrees, so you want roughly two metres of clear unobstructed ground off the door end, plus room to stand and work. If the unit is going against a fence, put the doors away from the fence. If it is going beside a shed, check that the shed roller door and the container doors are not going to fight each other. It is a ten-second decision on delivery day that you then live with for years, so make it beforehand.
